If you have any questions.
Whether searching for a new avenue of self expression, inspiration to keep away the workout blues, or pursuing a life path as a dancer, Dakini can help guide you along your way.
Dakini's main focus is on bringing strong self awareness to her students. Being in touch with your body and how it moves is the first step in reaching your goals and letting your own light shine from within.
Dakini teaches both modern and traditional styles of Middle-Eastern, Central Asian, African and European folk dances, while drawing from her strong roots in classical ballet and modern jazz. She also deepens your learning experience by incorporating "sacred movement" expression, such as yoga and shamanic movement, into the class work for your personal growth and healing,
Let Dakini customize a private or semi-private lesson just for you, so that you can learn in a style most beneficial to your personal needs. Dance lessons are a great gift, especially to yourself. (And you deserve it!)
Fusion Foundations
World Fusion Dance Technique
This class bears the word "Fusion" because the instructor draws from a blend of techniques -- including Middle Eastern, North African and Central Asian "belly dance," but also some western modern ballet and jazz. This approach allows beginning students to experience a broad range of styles, while giving them a solid foundation in good posture, isolation, musicality and connection with rhythm. Exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and stamina are part of the class structure, but are not meant as a measure of your success. Learn how to play the zills/sagat (finger cymbals) along with your first steps into belly dance! There will be an opportunity to purchase zills in class if you don't have them. Please wear non-restrictive clothing and a hip scarf to accent your movements. Water bottle and yoga mat are recommended. Fun is a must!
Ages 8 and up! All genders welcome and appreciated.
Cost: $14 Drop-in, or... 5-Week Session: $60
Dates: 11/28 - 1/2/2011 (no class Dec. 12th)
Special Rate: Only $110 When you sign up for both Fusion Foundations & Intermediate Fusion - (That's an additional $2 off each class for 5 weeks!)
Continuing from Fusion Foundations*, this class draws from a blend of techniques -- including Middle Eastern, North African and Central Asian "belly dance styles. Develop more challenging dance combinations and musicality. Posture, isolation, foot work and rhythm will be stressed. Explore various props! We will continue playing zills along with our dance. As this class progresses, we will offer opportunities to share solo choreographies in class with your peers! *Fusion Foundations not prerequisite, but enrollment in both is recommended for continuity. Background:
Dakini has studied with many leading instructors including: Sharon Moore, Sabura, Dalia Carella, Ansuya Rathor and Alexandra King. Since the early age of 4 Dakini explored classical ballet, jazz, tap, and Martha Graham modern dance, which laid the groundwork for her dance "language".
Dakini is a four year veteran member of the Veils of the Nile dance company, directed by Aleili, which often performs for non-profits and charity benefits as well as international culture fairs. The Veils sponsor a quarterly performance venue geared toward encouraging new dancers. Check out www.aleili.com. Dakini plans to do similar work here in California.
In addition, she is a two-time graduate of Helene Eriksens Traditional Dance Ensemble, ANAR, which began as a training project, and debuted at Folklife in Seattle, WA in 2008. See www.helene-eriksen.de.
Witnessing Dakini dance is nothing short of inspirational. Her expressions bring something rare and refreshingly authentic to those watching. Though her training is based in many traditional forms of dance, her interpretation and fusion of cultural styles is something that is uniquely her own and a gift to behold.
Dakini captivates audiences with her spontaneity, charm, and fluidity. Her interpretations are always fresh, with a fiery spark of passion and playfulness, and demonstrate her skills developed over 30+ years of experience. She believes in dancing from the heart and letting each live performance evolve in an organic way that speaks to the audience and gives vision to the music.
A student of several traditional and modern dance styles, Dakini has made it her priority to study with many of the leading instructors on the east & west coasts of the U.S. in order to gain a richly diverse knowledge base. She has also expanded her repertoire to include spiritual and shamanic dance, as well as other sacred movement-based expressions, appropriate for gatherings of a non-secular nature, such as ceremonies or spiritual retreats.
Contact Dakini for rates and booking. Also available to travel, by special arrangement.
